Shoot 'Em Ups

Saturday night, sitting between my dad and cousin Chris, I was formally initiated into the mysterious world of Westerns, which my dad fondly refers to as "Shoot 'Em Ups." First of all, I highly recommend the new movie "3:10 to Yuma." The action is great, Russell Crowe is hard core and Christian Bale is ruggedly attractive. I am sure the men on either side of me would have different things to say about the movie, but all around we agreed that the modern take on the old Western has succeeded. As a little girl I can remember my dad and Papaw leaving Thanksgiving night, sans women, to eat popcorn for dinner and forget about the family drama in the comfort of the Movies 8. I never understood the camaraderie and inspiration of the "Shoot 'Em Up" until last night. And to take it a step further...I watched Tombstone for the first time today. Unlike my male family members, I did shed some tears when Doc and Wyatt had their moment at Doc's deathbed. But through the tears, something deeper happened..I realized the cultural importance of the Man Movie. Without these movies our men lose a part of their gun slinging, cigar smoking, get the bad guy heritage. And if our men lose their wildness, what will they do? The dishes? So I put out a call to women everywhere...indulge your man and his "shoot 'em ups." Let him be wild and wish he was Russel Crowe. And if you have the privilege of joining your men in this cultural ritual, take the opportunity. Just don't let them see you cry. Or you won't be invited back. Take a look at "3:10 to Yuma."
